final settlement of Nathan Douglass estate; $33.23 balance due and paid to Nathan
    • NATHAN DOUGLASS'S ESTATE: 1863
      Final Settlement
      September 1863

Nathan's maternal grandfather, Nathan Douglass, died in May of 1854. Final settlement of Nathan's estate was made in September of 1863. This settlement divided the proceeds from the sale of Nathan's slaves and land. Each of Nathan's children - William, Samuel, Polly, and Rebecca - were to get an equal share; each share amounted to $4,345.89. The settlement records note that Rebecca had died leaving five children; thus, each child was entitled to a 1/5 share, totaling $689.97 after deducting advancements and interest on those advancements.

Nathan received a $300 payment in September of 1859, and then an additional $250 in May of 1861. This left a balance due and paid to him, upon final settlement in September of 1863, of $33.23
