Pilson to Prague, to Leipzig Germany, to Bremen; sailed on Hermann; arrived this date in Baltimore. Mother Katherine and sister Mary also on board this ship
    • Family stories hold that Katherine Brada Cesak came to America from Bohemia after the death of her husband, John Cesak   She came with several of her daughters to join another daughter in St. Louis.  At least one daughter remained behind in Bohemia.
According to the obituary of Lena Cesak Havelka (Katherine's daughter), which was printed in the Alton, Illinois Evening Telegraph in March 1939, the trip to the United States began in Pilsen with a stop in Prague before going on to Leipzig Germany where they went by train to Bremen. They stayed in Bremen for three days before leaving on a sailboat. According to stories told to the children of Lena, at one time the only food during the journey was “potato soup” and very hard bread. After many weeks they landed in Baltimore, Maryland on July 25, 1868. Before landing in Baltimore, the passengers saw lights indicating land after being on the vessel for about 6 weeks. It was evening time and great joy was felt by all. The next morning land was no where in sight and the passengers believed their ship had been blown back from the shore. Much weeping followed. However, it was learned later that their ship had passed through the narrow entrance into Chesapeake Bay and later that day they landed in Baltimore (August 25, 1868). Catherine and her daughters later joined family members in St. Louis where they lived in the area of 11th and Soulard in the Lafayette Square area.

Ship records show a Catherine, Maria, and Magdalene "Casak" departing Bremen on the ship Hermann and landing in Baltimore on July 20, 1868.  We believe this record shows the immigration of our Katherine, Maria, and Magdalene.  The names are the same, and the date of immigration is very close.

    • Obituary of Mrs. Mathias Havelka

Mrs. Mathias Havelka, whose maiden name was Lena Cesak, was born in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, December 9, 1855. At the age of nine years, after her father had died, her mother brought her along with six other children to America. For twelve weeks they were on the Atlantic, when they landed at Baltimore, Maryland. From there they made their way to St. Louis where they rejoined an eighth daughter who had come to America some years previous. It was in St. Louis that Miss Cesak spent her youthful years. There she met Mathias Havelka, also a native of Czechoslovakia. It was to him that she was later united in wedlock, on June 22, 1875.
Following their marriage, the couple moved to near Owensville, and there Mr. Havelka was engaged in farming until the time of his death in 1923. To this union twelve children were born, nine of whom survive.

During the last fifteen years Mrs. Havelka had been making her home with
her daughter, Mrs. A. White, of East Alton, Illinois, spending some of her summers with her children of this vicinity.

She took very ill about a year ago, when it was feared her end was near. She, however, rallied her strength, one more, adding another year to her life.

Death came quite unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, March 8. She had been somewhat indisposed, and had required the special services of her daughter during the night. When morning came, her daughter came to attend to her and to her amazement discovered that her mother had passed aay in her sleep. She had reached the age of 83 years, 2 months, and 29 days.

Funeral services were conducted from the Gottenstroeter Chapel with Rev. H.E.Stalhut officiating, and burial was in the City Cemetery on Saturday.

Those surviving are her nine children: J.F. Havelka and Mrs. Pauline White of East Alton, Illinois; W.A. Havelka and Mrs. Mary Tayloe of Owensville; Tony Havelka of Edwardsville, Illinois; Adolph, Edward and John Havelka of St. Louis and Mrs. Dollie Oakley of Rye, Colorado. Eighteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also remain.
