    • James was engaged in farming in Crawford County, Missouri. His second wife, Ellen Hamilton, passed away in the summer of 1896 and James (so the story goes as told by family members) being in poor health told his older sons that they were to keep the farm going and provide for the younger children after his death. (The older children were from his first marriage.) However, following his death the farm was disposed of and the older sons left the area. This left the smaller children homeless. They were taken in by various neighbors and relatives.
