    • according to family stories, Bridgit's stepmother Mary was not in favor of Bridgit's plans to marry William Little. William was much older than Bridget. Also, Bridgit was supporting Mary - actually Mary took her weekly pay. We do not know if this had something to do with her unfavorable thoughts of the marriage. Mary found the calico fabric that Bridgit had purchased to make a wedding dress and cut it into pieces. Of course Bridget was very upset. A friend (Mrs. McGuire) purchased more fabric for Bridgit - it is not known if Mrs. McGuire made the dress for Bridgit or gave Bridgit a place to make it herself. When William and Bridgit set the date for the wedding, Mary was still against it and said she would stop the wedding. So, William and Bridgit went to the Cathedral (on State Street in Alton) an hour before the church service was to began and were married. After they walked out of the church they met stepmother, Mary, walking to church but they were already married.
    • note - William was residing in the home of James McGuire on the 1870 census.

    Flood! Move to Alton
    • After their marriage, William and Bridget settled on a farm in what is now called West Alton, then called Missouri Point. William and Bridgit lived on a strip of land just above the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. William and Bridget were flooded several times. During one flood, they managed to bring their live stock to the Illinois shore until the water went down. In the spring of 1892, however, the area suffered a historic flood. In the middle of May, the levy suddenly broke and the flooding was severe. The family lost everything. The family moved all of their belongings up to the second floor and were living there but the flood waters began coming in the second floor windows. The family had to be rescued from the second story. William helped his family members onto a skiff and they made their way across the river to Alton. When the flood waters receded they went back to find that there was absolutely nothing left-no house, no belongings, no outbuildings or animals. The family decided to return to Alton, Illinois, which they did, settling on Ridge Street. William and Bridgit remained in Alton for the remainder of the lives.
