      Stevens, Andrew C., Sr.
      Danville Commercial News Wednesday, August 4, 1937
      Struck by a 500 pound pot shaped rock that fell without warning from the roof of a room in which he was working at Peabody mine, Catlin.
      Andrew C. Stevens, Sr. of Catlin was killed instantly. The accident occurred about 9:30 A.M. The rock struck him on the side. He was crushed about the hips and chest. His body was taken to Berhalter Funeral Home, Danville. A son Andrew Jr was working in another part of the mine at the time.
      Employed at Peabody 20 years, Mr. Stevens was active in affairs of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a past president of Local 1944 at Peabody. He had been a minor between 40 and 50 years. Mr. Stevens was born at Grape Creek June 12, 1873. The widow and several other children survive.

      The funeral services of Andrew C. Stevens, Sr., 64 of Catlin, were at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Ashby, 103 West Fourteenth St. at 2 PM Friday. The Rev. E.M. Norton officiated. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Catlin. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Erma Stevens, a son Andrew C. Stevens, Jr., and three daughters Mrs. Josephine Wakeland, Mrs. Donnice Hertel, and Mrs. Thelma Ashby all of Danville. One sister, Mrs. Helen N. Winland of Danville and a brother, Leander Stevens of Willow Springs, IL. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren.
