    • according to family stories, Mary's stepdaughter Bridget and William Little decided to get married. Mary was not in favor of the marriage. Seems William was some 20 years older than Bridget. Also, Bridget was supporting Mary-actually Mary took her weekly pay. We do not know if this had something to do with her unfavorable thoughts of the marriage. Bridget finally purchased some calico fabric to make a wedding dress and May found the fabric an cut it into pieces. Of course Bridget was very upset. A friend (Mrs. McGuire) purchased more fabric for her and it is not known if she made the dress for Bridget or gave her a place to make it herself. William and Bridget set the date for the wedding and Mary was still against it and said she would stop the wedding. So, William and Bridget went to the Cathedral (on State Street in Alton) an hour before the church service was to began and were married. After they walked out of the church they met stepmother, Mary, walking to church but they were already married.
