    • George was mentioned in a letter written by his uncle, Anson Nicholson, shortly after George's birth. Anson was writing his half-sister and her husband, Elizabeth and Amos Henthorn, who were living in Henry County, Iowa:

      "Danville, Vermilion, Illinois
      April 7th, AD 1856

      Dear Brother and Sister,
I now take the present opportunity to inform you that I am well at present. Hoping these few lines find you all enjoying the same God's blessing. Mother and Grandmother are both very poorly. They have had gawre (?) but they have got it broke. The rest is tolerable health at present. Now dear friends my heart doth ache and my hand doth tremble while these few lines I write to think of our late departed friend. Sister Margaret left this world the third day of this month. She died very sudden. She had a child one day but we did not think her bad until the next morning one of the children came after me to go down and when I went I found her out of her head. I waited a short while and then started after a dr. and I rode to Georgetown and back as quick as I could and when I got back I found her dead.
Little Joseph, one of Margaret's twins, died the 30th of last month. He died very sudden too. We think he had the quinsy. Little Lewis has the ague. The rest of the children is well. We have got Jacob, Critan and Lewis is at John Sirend's and Anson is at William Booth's.
Delila has got a fine son. They call him George Washington. He was born the 27th of last month. We have not heard from the Salt Fork since the first of Feb. We have had a very cold winter and spring. There is ice a foot thick yet along some of the small branches. Wheat is worth from 75 to $2 a bu., corn 20 cents, potatoes $1 a bu. Stock is not quite so high as it has been. No more at present but remain your affectionate brother until death.

      Andson Nicholson"

      Trial of Wm. Housley
The case of Wm. Housley, charged with the murder of Joe Ferguson, in Ulysses Sept. 27, 1888, was called on Wednesday. Beside the 18 jurors already present for service it was necessary before a satisfactory jury was impaneled to summon 28 more citizens of Grant county to serve as jurors. Finally the following jury was accepted: J.J. Rosson, L.L. Coyle, S.S. Maben, G.M. Crampton, G.W. Nicholson, L.C. Reynolds, G.W. Dobson, Charles Lowderman, Roy Ewen, Timothy Nihill, Wm. Rush, E.H. Adams. Some of the witnesses did not appear when called and bench warrants were issued. There are over thirty witnesses for the state and defense. The state is represented by County Attorney Hutchison, J.L. Pancoast, A.F. Hoilenbeck and T.W. Marshall, and the defendant by Col. S.N. Wood. The state opened the case Wednesday, the prisoner pleading "not guilty," and proceeded with the examination of witnesses. The trial will not be ended until some time next week. The evidence is to the effect that at about 7 o'clock on the morning of the above day Housley stepped on to the Opera House platform and approached the spot at a hitching rack where Ferguson and others were standing, and at a distance of about eight feet from Ferguson accosted the latter: "Joe, you've been talking about me long enough; ---- you, you've got to quit it." Ferguson got up on the boardwalk at this and said he would talk as much as he pleased, it being alleged by some witnesses that he had a knife in his hand. Housley took one or two steps backward and drew his revolver. Ferguson approached to within four feet, with the revolver pointing at his breast, and grabbed at or attempted to push aside the weapon. Housley at this motion lowered the revolver, which exploded, the ball taking effect in Ferguson's leg. Ferguson fell with the exclamation that he was shot; and Housley walked away, saddled a pony and rode out of town. At the time he was a deputy marshal of Ulysses. Ferguson was taken to a building, where an examination was held, which adduced the fact that the bone of his leg was badly shattered and hope of saving his life called for amputation. The fractured bone was exhibited in court. The defense sought in cross-examination of the physicians on the witness stand to show that the amputation was the cause of death. Court adjourned last evening and the trial will be resumed this morning. The plaintiff's witnesses have not all been examined.

      Not Guilty
The trial of Wm. Housley, charged with murdering J. Ferguson, came to an end yesterday morning at about 8:30, when the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
The jury was instructed by Judge Botkin Thursday morning and then taken in hand by Co. Atty. Hutchinson and A.F. Hollenbeck. The afternoon was consumed by Colonel Wood for the defense. In the evening J.L. Pancoast spoke in behalf of the state.
The jury occupied the court room Thursday night and did not come to an agreement until yesterday morning. Five ballots were taken, for of which stood nine for acquittal and three for conviction.
