    • Approximate date of birth calculated from 1810 census, Spots Co VA, and 1820 census, Mercer Co Kentucky

We do not definitively know where George was born.
~ In later years, his daughters Mary Ann and Sarah are listed on census records as having a father born in Virginia. Son James Allen is listed as having a father born in Ireland.

~ Old family notes state that George Stewart "came from Scotland." Whether this means George was the immigrant, or just that he was Scottish, we do not know.

    • ** also on the census page are two John Stewarts and a Benjamin Stewart. One of these John Stewarts is over 45.

    Misc Family Stories
    • Article reporting on Stewart Family 8th Reunion, notes that George Stewart and his wife, Philadelphia Pierce, of Baltimore, Maryland, were the first Stewarts to come to Kentucky and they had 10 children: Maria, Thomas, Nancy, Sarah, Lucy, Jane, Mary, James Allen, John, and William Stewart.
(I have not been able to verify all these children - specifically I have not been able to verify Maria, Nancy, John, or William (unless William is George Jr.)

    Old Stewart Homeplace
    • Per family stories, the old Stewart home place was located on the hill at the corner of Fallis Run Road and Battlefield Road, in Mercer County. That area became known as Stewart, or Stewartsville, or the Stewart Community (many variations of the name over the years)
The old home burnt circa 1966-1976.
No land records ever found for George Sr.
George and Delphia are never listed on the tax rolls as owning any land

Misc Slave Parker: records indicate that George had a slave named Parker
    • George is listed on the 1820, 1822, and 1823 tax rolls as having one black over the age of 16.

    • The following two documents show that George had a slave named Parker.
The documents also verify that Elizabeth May is a heir (daughter) of George and Delphia; that she was married to William May; and that George Jr. was a son of George (sr) - and he had two heirs

"Know all men by these presents that I William May of the county of Mercer and State of Kentucky for and in consideration of Twenty one dollars 62 1/2 cents to be paid on or before the sixth day of October next here grant bargain and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto James A. Died Between 1823 and 1824  [5
    • George died between 1823 and 1824. He is listed on the 1823 tax rolls for Mercer County. He never again appears on the tax rolls. In 1824, Delphia is listed as the person responsible for taxes. Delphia is also listed as the person responsible for taxes on the 1826, 1827, 1829, and 1830 tax rolls. In 1826 and 1827, she is expressly noted to be the "widow of George Stewart."

    Buried
    • Unknown. We presume at the homeplace. Delphia is buried at the Jacob Carpenter Cemetery; the earliest marked burial for the cemetery, however, is 1837. Jacob Carpenter first acquired land in Mercer County in 1834. So it appears the cemetery was not yet in existence when George died.
