The first settlement of Nathan's estate was made in May of 1856 - at which time the executor divided the proceeds of the estate sale equally between William, his brother Samuel, his sister Polly, and his mother Nelly, all according to the terms of Nathan's will. Each of the four shares amounted to the sum of $270.65. Nathan Douglass Estate
    • final settlement of Nathan Douglass' estate was made in September of 1863. This settlement divided the proceeds from the sale of Nathan's slaves and land. Each of Nathan's children - William, Samuel, Polly, and Rebecca - were to get an equal share; each share amounted to $4,345.89. Of this amount, the executors advanced William $245 - no date noted. The settlement records note that Willis Walden - William's brother-in-law - bought out William's share and interest in the estate. This appears to have happened as early as September of 1859, when Willis acknowledged receipt of $1,804.65. Willis acknowledged receipt of another $1,000 in January of 1863, and then the remainder in September of 1863. The settlement records do not indicate whether William was dead.
